A decision at work

Situation

Ace of Cups 1 · Cups

Ace of Cups

Situation — Ace of Cups. A single chalice overflows, five streams running over the rim, held up by a hand that came out of nowhere. This is not a card about a decision being made. It is a card about something having already been offered — and the giveaway is the overflow. The cup is spilling because it is fuller than it can hold. Whatever this choice is at work, you are not weighing two dry options from a distance. Something has already moved in you, and the part of you doing the arguing is running behind the part that already knows.

Obstacle

The Tower XVI · Major Arcana

The Tower

Obstacle — The Tower. Lightning takes the crown off a high tower and two figures fall from the windows. In the Obstacle seat this is rarely the disaster people expect — it is the fear of it. What is in your way is a picture of the aftermath: who is inconvenienced, what arrangement stops working, whose good opinion you spend. That picture is doing real work to keep you still, and it deserves one honest look rather than a hundred glances. Notice that the tower in the image was built on a rock, not on the ground. Something raised high on a narrow base is not made safe by nobody touching it.

Advice

Queen of Swords 13 · Swords

Queen of Swords

Advice — Queen of Swords. She sits above the clouds, sword upright, one hand open. She is not the cruel figure she is often taken for — she is the one who can hold a clear thought and a kind intention at the same time, which is exactly what a decision like this needs. Say it plainly. Say it once. Do not decorate it, do not soften it into ambiguity, and do not hold a rehearsal in your head for a conversation you have not yet had. Clarity delivered early is a kindness; clarity delivered late is a bill.
